My Three 'Vettes
by Don

My Corvette story is about three
'Vettes. My first was a 57 fuelie which I bought because my wife wouldn't agree that we
needed a new GTO when I graduated from the U. I told her we should at least get a used car
which she agreed to, thinking it would be a Chevy or Olds. I came home with a white 57
which I kept until I moved to Chicago. I sold it thinking it would be stolen
since we lived in an apartment and bought a Camaro convert. Two years later I
bought the 66 Corvette which I still own thirty-eight years later. I was not going to make
the same mistake I did when I sold the 57. We had moved back to the Cities and we had a
garage at last.

I wasn't
interested in new 'Vettes during the 70's, but in 1985 I noticed that
'Vettes were winning races again. I bought a new 86 and put on 172000 miles driving to
work and all around the country. I sold it in 2005 with much regret but great
memories. Wonderful car, especially after I had it re-built to 375 HP.

The 66 was my year-round daily driver-- selling computer systems for IBM and then
industrial real estate for about 8 years. I put over 150,000 miles on it, then retired it
from active duty. I estimate that it has over 250,000 miles on it. I had
it restored in 1988. It still runs great and looks great, and I am planning the
next phase of its life right now...... possibly converting it into a 'Vette rod.
